This Christmas Eve, we decided to stay at The Getaway House. If you aren't familiar with this amazing concept, they are basically well-equipped, tiny houses in the middle of the woods. So far, you can find them in New York, Boston, & D.C. with cabins available for couples and groups. The campsite we stayed in was located in the Catskill Mountains in New York, about a two hour car ride from the city.
Upon arrival, after driving thru the most amazing sunset, we started a fire and made some smores (for purchase under provisions). The firewood and fire starter were provided by the Getaway House at an additional cost and the lighter was in the kitchen.
The cabins are based on a minimalist design, as they are sleek and modern, but the main attraction is definitely the oversized window facing the woods. It's the perfect backdrop for a photo op and we were so lucky to wake up to snow!
The kitchen is well-equipped with pots and pans, cups, plates, cooking utensils, and a double stove burner with a kettle. Water is also drinkable which is a bonus.
We didn't use the shower, but it was clean and had shampoo & conditioner for you. The toilet was interesting at first, but once we wrapped our brains around the dry, air flushing process, it was fine to use.
Snacks are also provided at an additional cost, which isn't listed on their website. Everything is reasonably priced, but caution: BRING YOUR OWN HOT COCOA.
There's also a mini fridge and little entertainment area with books, a radio (with aux), and a deck of cards.
We hadn't been camping or (glamping) for over a year, so this was a nice refresh back to nature. I never thought I would enjoy being in the woods during the winter time, but because the cabin has central heating and a portable heater, it was definitely bearable. Plus the bed and bedding were very comfortable and cozy. It was a toasty stay.
I highly recommend getting away and venturing into the woods. It was a fun experience, and we can't wait to return. The cabin has the basics covered, all you need to do is to bring your drinks and meals to cook. Hope this helps on your next getaway!
